Music Project Students Enjoy Kingsfield Experience

As part of a tour of the Royal Burgh organised by Linlithgow Tours, the French and German students from Linlithow's 'twinned towns' of Guyancourt and Pernitz seemed to enjoy their time at Kingsfield in mid April.

After visiting Linlithgow Palace, St.Michaels Church and Annet House the group were transported to our Golf Facility where they were split into 3 groups. Alternating from an introduction to the game of Golf presented by David Burns , our Laser Clay 'Shoot to Thrill' pursuit and enjoying lunch in the Tee Caddy Coffee Shop the attendees smiles indicated that they had indeed appreciated the on site leisure opportunities.

After some intersting Golf swings being observed and amazing shooting positions the group were then entertained onboard the St.Magdalene Canal boat by Accordionist Bob Proudfoot. The kids joined in with singing and clapping to Bob's selection of music as they cruised along the Union Canal towards Linlithgow.

This great group of young people showed their appreciation at all stages of the day to the Tourism Guides at the places visited and to the Golf and Laser Clays instructors as well as to Jane and Helen for lunch and Bob for his jovial music.

We all hope you enjoyed your visit to Linlithgow and hope to meet with you , your family and friends in the future back in the Royal Burgh or in your towns during future Twinning Visits.

A day of National Celebration

A Day of National Celebration

This week St Andrew's Day has been approved as a "Day of National Celebration" by the Scottish Parliament.

November 30th 2007, and there after, will be regarded as a "voluntary public holiday" with staff giving up another day's holiday in lieu.

West Lothian NEWS noticed that during last Thursday - 30th November- a huge increase in people actually celebrating the Patron Saint's Day. In Linlithgow alone a ' Celebrate St.Andrew's Day in the Royal Burgh ' catered for over thirty people and during the tour cries of 'Happy St.Andrew's Day' were heard along with 'warm' handshakes, kisses on cheeks and patriotic hugs being exchanged by many more.

It is hoped that this is only the start of what could be a great National Holiday being celebrated in Scotland as it is already well established by expatriate Scots through out the world.

MUSIC AT THE CROSS HELPS REVIVE LINLITHGOW TRADITION

The ancient heart of Linlithgow came alive with contemporary summer song this year, as a time-honoured programme of musical entertainment gets a modern make-over, and catches the ear and the eye of everyone at the historic Cross, in the centre of the Royal Burgh.

Wednesday afternoons in July and August had even more of a party atmosphere as the musically talented burghers let their hair down. Traditionally a recreation period for the hard-working townsfolk of Linlithgow, the midweek “half-day” was a rare opportunity for local musicians to gather for practice in the town’s historic heart. During the height of summer, they’d play at The Cross for visitors, neighbours and friends alike.

In a modern interpretation of that tradition, the Linlithgow Business Association, with the funding support of West Lothian Council, commissioned active music groups from around the burgh to perform at the same, traditional meeting place, offering a series of free events to help encourage everyone to enjoy their day in Linlithgow.

Ronnie Bamberry, events co-ordinator for the Linlithgow Business Association, said that:

"The Cross has always been a focal point for Linlithgow, and this was a great opportunity to bring some regular public entertainment into the heart of the town.

We had some really talented musicians involved..!

We achieved our aim of encouraging more people to visit, stay, shop, dine and thoroughly enjoy the Royal Burgh"

Accordion duets; a concert group from the local reed band; and the pipes and drums played to very appreciative audiences and teh kids were entertained during a special visit by Nancy of the Ceramic Workshop

Gateway to a Royal Burgh: a new way to experience a historic Scottish town

From Kingsfield Leisure Golf Driving Range, Monty or Tiger could probably hit a drive all the way to Linlithgow Palace. A golf ball bouncing through the walled garden may be a new experience for Mary, Queen of Scots – and custodians Historic Scotland – but that would be the only real change since the tragic monarch’s day. Even the virgin queen would recognise modern-day Linlithgow as the royal burgh of her birth.

Royal entourages of course are not the only Linlithgow procession these days. Fairs, bands marches and even a proposed farmers market can make visiting the High Street’s myriad specialist shops even more enticing – but you may well have to take advantage of the town's generous off street parking to best enjoy them. Better then to make a regal promenade on foot. It’s the best way to enjoy the town, and that's where Kingsfield comes into its own.

More than just a great golf driving range, the four-star visitor experience at Kingsfield Leisure, on the eastern approach to Linlithgow, is set up to be the gateway to the beautiful historic royal burgh.

General Manager Robert Arkley invites one and all to at Kingsfield. For five generations his family have farmed here, now he's harvesting a crop of leisure activities to compliment the acres still under plough. "We can welcome anyone from a solo visitor to a coach tour, and take them right to the heart of Linlithgow, without their vehicle even leaving our car park. That way, the town doesn’t get congested, and you don’t have to worry about finding a parking space. It's a great way to really get in touch with Linlithgow, and a great way to spend the day."

Nevertheless, if your interests are the same as European Tour golfers like Stephen Gallagher, and you’d rather get in touch with perfecting your golf swing, or even improving your aim on the laser clay shooting range, you need not even leave Kingsfield. Swing, shoot and play away, while the rest of your party indulge in a bespoke version of the Linlithgow experience.

For the rest us, it's a short transfer from Kingsfield to the nearby Park Bistro, right on the tranquil union Canal. Cruise from the landing jetty right into the old town basin, story tellers and players regaling visitors all the way. With a qualified and knowledgeable Blue-Badge guide waiting to lead your party from the canal vessels to the medieval vennels of old Linlithgow. There's every opportunity to get the most from the sights of the town - the famous palace, the picturesque loch and the multitude of people and places that make Linlithgow unique. There's even time for an ample sample of the High Street's traditional mix of quality independent traders - a real slice of Linlithgow life.

As your transfer coach delivers you the mile from the Town Cross to Kingsfield, there's time for a hearty refreshment in the Tea Caddy lounge. "We might even let you try out the putting green", says Kingsfield's Robert Arkley, "If you've any energy left after your relaxing day out in Linlithgow."

Next year, the Anniversary Course, a par-three 9-hole golfing test, will open to mark Kingsfield's twelfth year. The town sports new retail, eating and swanky apartments. There are butchers, bakers, even candle stick makers, all adding to the mix. These days even Mary would find something new in a visit to Linlithgow.
